SLO 1: Students will recognize how the scientific method is utilized to explore biological processes.

Evaluation 1: Student learning outcomes were assessed by using a 15 question standardized multiple choice examination at the end of the semester. A total of three questions (Q-1 – Q-3) were used to assess SLO-1.

Eval 1: 70% or > successful 69% or < unsuccessful. The percent is based upon the average of correctly answered questions related to SLO 1. Total Students Tested = 301

Observations/Changes based on previous cycle (19-20): Instructors will provide students with materials that they can access at home. As a department we noticed a distinct trend, where students learning objective mastery increased with the transition to online learning. This could be due to continual access to course materials and lectures.

Observations/Changes based on current cycle (20-21): We will return to offering in-person sections of BIO 101. When we do, we will continue to make the lecture notes and study aids available throughout the semester. We will then analyze the SLO data to see if access to materials at all times improves SLO mastery in a traditional section.
SLO 2: Students will have the ability to recognize biological processes at the molecular, cellular and organismal levels.

Evaluation 2: Student learning outcomes were assessed by using a 15 question standardized multiple choice examination at the end of the semester. A total of seven questions (Q4-Q10) were used to assess SLO-2.

Observations/Changes based on previous cycle (19-20):
The department decided that we would incorporate virtual dissections and anatomy videos to improve mastery of this learning objective.

Observations/Changes based on current cycle (20-21): It should be noted that the learning objectives for BIO 101 were changed at the system level and this content is no longer a part of BIO 101 and has been moved into BIO 102. We will meet to determine new SLO objectives to match the system level objectives and will create a new assessment to address this change.
