Observations/Changes based on previous cycle (18-19): Although this year marked the beginning of a new assessment cycle, this SLO remained the same. In AY 2018-2019, the success rate was 82% overall. Strategies mentioned in that year included providing information such as artist, title, date, style and medium on all lecture and demonstration slides to reinforce the style/category of artwork throughout the semester. Observations/Changes based on current cycle (19-20): The success rate for this SLO increased by 8.5% over the previous year. Each art style has tell-tale visual clues that can be stressed when explaining the motivations of each style and period. Instructors will add more detailed demonstration slides to reinforce this objective. |
| SLO 2: The student will apply art terminology to describe the themes, intentions, and motivations of artists from different time periods. | Evaluation 2: Written Assignment: Descriptive Analysis of a Work of Art | Eval 2: 70% of students will successfully analyze a work of art, using art terminology to describe the theme, intentions, and motivations of artists from different periods. Example Rubric | Academic Year 2019-2020 20 Sections 652/717 = 91% Fall 2019 15 sections 493/544 = 91% Online: 5 sections 191/206 = 91% Jefferson: 4 sections 137/146 = 94% Shelby: 4 sections 127/136 = 93% Pell City: 2 sections 38/56 = 68% Spring 2020 5 Sections 159/173 = 92% Online: 3 sections 109/117 = 92% Shelby: 2 sections 50/56 = 89% | Summary: The objective was met for this outcome with 91% of students successfully achieving the outcome. Observations/Changes based on previous cycle (2018-2019): The percentage of success for this outcome remained the same when comparing totals from 2018-2019. Observations/Changes based on current cycle (2019-2020): Instructors are still focusing on art terms and relating the values of a time period and a society to the art made in that period as the backbone of the entire ART 100 class. In this course students use the textbook game application Inquisitive which allows them to learn and practice using art terms. This practice prepares students to complete an essay assessment of an artwork that incorporates as many of the visual elements, design principles, and art terms as applicable. The instructors will direct students to a website with lists of descriptive words used to critique art to develop their essays more effectively. |
| SLO 3: The student will analyze the cultural significance and influence of art and visual expression in society. | Evaluation 3: Written Assignment: Analysis of a Work of Art | Eval 3: 70% of students will successfully analyze a work of art, using art terminology to describe the theme, intentions, and motivations of artists from different periods. Example Rubric | Academic Year 2019-2020 20 Sections 610/713 = 86% Fall 2019 15 sections 449/540 = 83% Online: 5 sections 186/202 = 89% Jefferson: 4 sections 111/146 = 76% Shelby: 4 sections 119/136 = 88% Pell City: 2 sections 33/56 = 59% Spring 2020 5 Sections 161/173 = 86% Online: 3 sections 110/117 = 93% Shelby: 2 sections 51/56 = 90% | Summary: Overall, this outcome was successful with 86% of students successfully analyzing art’s cultural significance in society. Observations/Changes based on previous cycle (2018-2019): This outcome was new for the 3-year cycle beginning in AY 2019-2020, and therefore has no previous year data. Observations/Changes based on current cycle (2019-2020): With the addition of this new SLO, instructors will change the assessment model to the essay assignment for a more appropriate assessment. The revised assignment includes a specific question for students to address in the essays about the cultural significance of a work of art and its influence, along with sentence starters to guide students in their writing. |
