Biology 101: 2019-2020

Intended OutcomesMeans of AssessmentCriteria for SuccessSummary & Analysis of Assessment EvidenceUse of Results
SLO 1: Students will recognize how the scientific method is utilized to explore biological processes. Evaluation 1: Student learning outcomes were assessed by using a 15 question standardized multiple choice examination at the end of the semester. A total of three questions (Q-1 – Q-3) were used to assess SLO-1.Eval 1: 70% or > successful
69% or < unsuccessful.
The percent is based upon the average of correctly answered questions related to SLO 1.
Total Students Tested = 341
Total Annual Success Rate: 78%

Observations/Changes based on previous cycle (18-19):
The department implemented various Scientific Method assignments designed to introduce students to the scientific method and apply the scientific method to problems. These assignments are used across all classes in both traditional and online sections of BIO 101.

Observations/Changes based on current cycle (19-20): Instructors will provide students with materials that they can access at home. As a department we noticed a distinct trend, where students learning objective mastery increased with the transition to online learning. This could be due to continual access to course materials and lectures.
SLO 2: Students will have the ability to recognize biological processes at the molecular, cellular and organismal levels.Evaluation 2: Student learning outcomes were assessed by using a 15 question standardized multiple choice examination at the end of the semester. A total of seven questions (Q4-Q10) were used to assess SLO-2.Eval 2: 70% or > successful
69% or < unsuccessful.
The percent is based upon the average of correctly answered questions related to SLO 2.

Observations/Changes based on previous cycle (18-19):
In 2018-2019 students did not master SLO 2, and the department sought to increase mastery by implementing case studies to provide relevance and using EdPuzzles – which are short, engaging videos. The goal is to provide a variety of media to increase understanding of the complex cellular functions encompassed in SLO 2

Observations/Changes based on current cycle (19-20): Instructors will provide students with materials that they can access at home. As a department we noticed a distinct trend, where students learning objective mastery increased with the transition to online learning. This could be due to continual access to course materials and lectures.
SLO 3: Students will demonstrate an ability to identify basic anatomical structures and the correlating physiology of human systems.
Evaluation 3: Student learning outcomes were assessed by using a 15 question standardized multiple choice examination at the end of the semester. A total of five questions (Q11-Q15) were used to assess SLO-3.Eval 3: 70% or > successful
69% or < unsuccessful.
The percent is based upon the average of correctly answered questions related to SLO 3.

Observations/Changes based on previous cycle (18-19):
SLO 3 has the lowest level of mastery for BIO 101. SLO 3 covers an overview of human anatomy and physiology. In an effort to increase engagement, virtual software will be incorporated. The College has a license for visible body, which is a 3D atlas of the human body.

Observations/Changes based on current cycle (19-20): Instructors will incorporate virtual dissections and anatomy videos to improve scores. Instructors will make materials available online throughout the semester
